Replacement Window FAQs

How do you measure for replacement windows?

Proper measurements are vital when replacing a window, and even slight errors can impact how well your new window fits. This is why we strongly encourage having a professional measure your window for replacement. If you’re inclined to measure your own windows, begin with the horizontal width:

  • Horizontal width: Make sure to measure at three locations—top, middle, and bottom. After measuring, be sure to select the smallest of the three numbers for your final width.
  • Vertical height: Again, measure at three locations: left, middle, and right, and select the smallest number for your final measurement.
  • Depth: Don’t forget to measure on all sides of the window for accuracy.

How much will it cost to replace windows?

The price of window replacement can change depending on numerous factors, such as size, style, and more. At Window World, we have options available for all budgets. To learn about the costs associated with your project, contact us today for a free estimate and review our current promotions.

How do you measure windows for blinds?

The approach to measuring your window for blinds changes depending on whether you’re installing inside mount blinds or outside mount blinds. Follow these steps with the type of blinds in mind: Inside mount blinds:

Inside mount blinds:

  • Begin by measuring your window frame’s depth.
  • Measure the width of your window at three different spots: the top, middle, and bottom. The smallest of these measurements should be used as your final width.
  • Measure your window’s height at three different spots: left, right, and center. Depending on the blinds or shades you’re installing, you will either use the smallest or the largest measurement.
  • Refrain from deducting any measurements for width or height, as manufacturers have already considered allowances and adjustments.

Outside mount blinds:

  • To ensure optimal coverage, measure the width you wish your blinds to cover, incorporating at least 1 ½” on each side.
  • Measure the height, beginning at the location where your blinds will be installed and continuing down to the window sill. Ensure you leave a 1 ½” to 2” overlap at the top to consider the mounting hardware for your blinds.
  • Do not deduct any measurements again; manufacturers have already included allowances for this.

How do you clean windows?

To ensure your windows stay clean and shiny, follow these straightforward steps:

  • Use a vacuum to clear away larger dust and debris.
  • Use a gentle cloth soaked in soapy water to clean your window sash and frame.
  • Wipe down the glass panes using a paper towel (or a lint-free cloth) with a glass cleaning solution of your choice, store-bought or homemade.
  • Detach your window screens and wash them with a basic combination of soap and water. Remember to let your screens air-dry completely following the cleaning process.

How do you replace a window screen?

Window screens are important for both functionality and visual appeal in your windows. If your window screen has significant damages, such as holes or tears, be sure to replace it without delay. Here’s how to do it:

  • Begin by removing the window screen from your window.
  • While laying your screen flat, remove the old mesh from the grooves that hold it securely.
  • Unroll and stretch the replacement screen mesh across your window frame, ensuring you leave extra along the edges, then cut with your tool of choice.
  • Take a spline roller and push the new screen mesh into the grooves of your screen’s frame.
  • After the new mesh is securely fitted, trim the additional material at the edges.
  • Reinstall your finished window screen.

What is a window sash?

A window sash is the part of the window responsible for holding the glass panes and their elements together. The sash is installed in the window frame and may be either fixed or movable, depending on the window’s style. With double-hung windows, the window sash can be raised and lowered to facilitate the flow of fresh air in and out of the home.
